Anyone know why they continue to name the Uluṟu airport as AYQ? Isn’t it time for a name change? ULR maybe??

Mumbai (BOM), Kolkata (CCU), Chennai (MMA), Beijing (PEK) and St Petersburg (LED) also fit that category of codes associated with previous names / spelling. I'm sure there are plenty of others. I guess they are difficult to change??

that’s a fair point, thanks. They could change the name of the airport itself though, and leave the code for now perhaps.

Hi @dm12,

I agree with @russell. Changing an airport’s ITA code is a very complicated process involving cooperation from lots of airlines and potentially countries (not really the case for AYQ). Also I don’t think changing Uluṟu’s airport code is very high up in the list of priorities considering the volatile state of aviation right now.

Cheers,

If your point is what I think it is, then you are dead wrong. Its "official" name is Uluru / Ayers Rock.....so no need to change the name.

You didn’t? It’s literally 95% that.

I am neither right wing or even close to being a boomer. I have more important things in life to worry about than an airports name or code. It doesn't even register as an issue.

What does politics have to do with it? It just makes sense to leave as is. Take your virtue signalling elsewhere..it’s an airport code for crying out loud.

Speaking of Right wing boomers. Bit of a generalisation! Although I do agree that it does not deserve thought right now

Except you worry enough about it to write a reply….a reply which highlights to me the fact it is very much an issue

I think anytime I hear the words virtue signalling, conservatism comes to mind. It’s an airport code that doesn’t reflect the Aboriginal nature of the destination it’s supposed to represent. Uluṟu is much more than a rock some white dude happened upon.

well a left wing boomer would think it does deserve thought right now…..reconciliation is a constant process not something for other people in the future.
