I’m trying to book redemption flights via velocity on QR from DOH to BNE, the flight is showing as DOH-MEL (5.5hrs layover)-ADL-BNE.
First 3 legs on QR.
Would i be able to pick up the bags at MEL and take a separate domestic flight from MEL-BNE unrelated to original booking without any issues? It seems silly to spend 5.5hrs in Mel, only to go to ADL before heading to BNE.
Why not just book a redemption flight from DOH to MEL and then book another flight MEL to BNE? That way your first flight terminates in Melbourne, you can collect your bags and easily transfer to the domestic terminal for the flight to Brisbane.

They are "married segments" - meaning they only show availability all the way through to ADL. You cannot book just to Melbourne.
AFAIK, you don't actually clear customs and immigration in Melbourne, and you are not permitted to leave the international air side area, so unfortunately no, you cannot terminate at Melbourne.
I could be wrong - please weigh in those who have done this tag flight.
pab2025 is correct in theory. However, I understand many pax do leave the flight in MEL even though booked to ADL. With carry on only this is no problem, just go through immigration etc as normal - you are entering Australia, not a specific city. Even with checked baggage I understand a word with QR ground staff in DOH will see your bags offloaded in MEL and onto the carousel. Immigrate, collect, then you're off to biosecurity as usual. You might like to confirm this if at all possible. QR do this flight as a back door means of getting a second flight into MEL that otherwise is not allowed. They know what the majority of pax want and it ain't ADL.
This may be too obvious but aren't there any redemption flights from DOH to MEL?
Often it does not work like that with redemption booking and especially so if one leg really sounds after like First Class. Once upon time I have booked SIN-SYD-PER, disembark in SYD and catch plane to MEL. I was looking very and I mean VERY vigorously and there where no flight SIN-SYD, SIN-MEL or SIN-SYD-MEL. Similarly recently I booked SYD-SIN-HND (first leg in First) and there where no tickets on horizon just SYD-SIN.
To OP. Considering that you arrive in MEL on international flight and continue on domestic you must pick your luggage and re-check it at domestic terminal. So go and check it on other plane and if you polite enough call Qantas and let them know that you not intend to board next plane. Also keep in mind that if you have one ticket DOH-BNE-DOH then they may cancel the rest (i.e. BNE-DOH) if you not show up on your next leg. If this is the case you MUST call them upon arriving in MEL if you do not like to loose your booking. This is why with redemption booking I never do return booking because it makes no advantages, but may restrict you severely.
